They were called "alligator bags" because of the texture of the bags; they were originally a smooth plastic bag and when they changed texture, they called "alligator." (I remember this; might have been the early 70s.)
I always hated the GLAD bags with the "fold-lock top" and that was what my mother usually bought because they were usually cheaper: she was a coupon-clipper.
