Oh man, now I really want one of those fishy baking dishes!! I wouldn't put hot tuna casselore in it (yuck) but I could think of lots of other things to serve in that!
That's fun! Lots of specialized dishes were the thing in the postwar world. My mom had a deviled egg plate that had a little chicken in the center. ;) Not taking themselves so seriously during parties was a hallmark of that generation. :)
That's true! They had their foodie monstrosities but I bet they would be horrified by some of the microwave stuff we eat today and maybe some types of fast food. I'm sure there are oddball recipes that are going to be mocked and ridiculed a generation from now. :)
Themed parties were a big deal, like themed nightclubs. Very big stuff! And lots of kitschy fun. :)
We used to do lots of themed parties - once we did a Titanic dinner and recreated the last dinner served (in the first class dining room). all the stops were pulled out and we had a grand time. Sadly, our friends are all too busy, too tired or (very sadly) dead to want to put up with themed parties any longer. The last one we threw had all but two guest cancel.
It does seem as if everyone's too busy or tired these days. Back in the '50s and '60s people worked hard, but they seemed to understand that leisure time was important. Those who didn't burned out real quick. People back then seemed to have more fun when they did get time off. Maybe people are too wired in these days to 'get away' from the world for a little while.
I totally agree with this! They seemed to have a better grasp of them importance of play in their off time. Now everyone is so plugged in that they always seem to be 'elsewhere' even when you are in a restaurant or at a party.
A friend of mine posted a pic on Facebook called 'The New Valentine's Date' showing two twentysomethings sitting at a table in a restaurant totally ignoring each other while they texted on their phones.
It used to be that turning the TV on during a gathering was considered rude!
