I think it's all about fashion and what was "hot" in art back in early 1900's. Just look at any artistic work (not that ads wouldn't be art!) or fashion design drawings from back then. Then again, in 1950's it might have been more fashionable or whatever to portray people as realistically as possible — as if they were photographed. :)
