I know this is an early notice but I want to have word spread about this as last time we did this on rather short notice and many people said they'd appreciate more notice so as to spread to the word. I also successfully added the buttons so you can repost this to LJ and other sites! So PLEASE spread the word!!!
Monday July 15
vintage_ads is having Gay Equality Day!! This is our second one and we will be doing this once a month. Ads that have gay subtext, blatantly gay, gay actors in the ad, gay designers, etc.
It was requested that non-community members be allowed to post and to comment and I gave that some consideration and decided that that was not a good idea. It is very easy to join, I believe just one click of a button. By having only members comment and post it is easier for me to handle any potential problem. It protects our members from non-members swooping in and harassing them, etc. So look at it as a level of protection, as that is how I view it!
I will be home all day on the 15th and there is ZERO tolerance for intolerance! I even rescheduled a dr.'s appointment to make sure I will be home all day on 'troll patrol'. If you get a nasty rude hateful comment on a post, I know it's difficult but please do not respond and contact me immediately and I will handle it. tia@misstia.com please put v. ads in the subject. If you are a regular member and would like my phone #, please email me or message me here on LJ and I will give it to you (For Gay Equality Day or any other day, I know some people have disabilities and it might be easier to send a text or a phone call, whatever is easier for y'all, I try to be easily reachable!). Last time we did this I got the majority of hate, threats, etc and I hope that is how it continues; but if it spreads to others, I will deal with it as I am very protective of our members.
We are having this day, again, and continuing, because LGBT rights are a human rights issue. Livejournal is owned by a Russian company and Russia is currently making being gay illegal. (Simplified there, but that's the basis of their current and upcoming laws.) Again, this is a human rights issue. We are not being political (well perhaps against the parties who support anti-LGBT legislation), we do NOT support xenophobia against Russians, and this is an issue that is affecting people worldwide in far too many countries besides just Russia. Throughout history the LGBT community has contributed things to society that we could not live without (including computers), so for countries and groups of people to want to outlaw them?! It's as if we are returning to the Dark Ages! So please do not attack Russia in your posts on Gay Equality Day as many many citizens there protests against what is being done, and many are too fearful to speak out and that is understandable.
Actress and Model Tilda Swinton has risked arrest in Moscow by waving a pride flag outside the Kremlin in violation of Russia's new homosexual propaganda bill. Tilda: In solidarity. From Russia with love.

Russia has said it will arrest, detain for 14 days and then deport openly gay tourists. Article here. If you are a legally married gay couple, then Russia shouldn't be on your travel list. If you have a rainbow flag, you could be arrested. If you simply hold hands, again, you could be arrested, detained, deported.
There are, unfortunately, those in the United States who are looking towards Russia approvingly with their draconian laws against the LGBT community and wish they could do the same here.
Russia's 2014 Winter Olympics, information about concerns and places to contact...
Russia is hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics. There are some LGBT athletes who are very concerned about going to Russia. The IOC says gays will not be targeted as all are welcome at the Olympics games statement here yet how can they determine how the Russian government will act? They've expressed 'concern' over the draconian Russian laws, yet feel that gay athletes will still be safe? How contradictory is that?? Here's another article about the Russian Olympics here.
If you would like your voice to be heard, here are some places to contact about the Russian 2014 Winter Olympics. If you do contact any of these places, please be polite in your message. (Scream at your computer screen, then type nicely :) Aside from the IOC, I've included contact information for the big sponsors of the games. I have sent them messages stating that I am aghast they are supporting an Olympic Games in a country that is discriminating against the LGBT community which is not only against the IOC code, but against their own company policies and state that by their sponsorship it appears they condone Russia's actions towards the LGBT community. I know a few messages will NOT make a difference but WE CAN tell them how we feel. If you are in Russia, you could tell the sponsors what it is like with those new laws.
