Advertisers still rely on this message, if a little more subtly. Think of car ads that tout their products' safety feature. How many of them feature a child secure in his car seat, the message being, "Don't let your baby die?"

Ah the FUD factor, Fear, Urgency and Dread. This has been a staple of advertising for years.

I think it's amazing that Thermos has come to mean all these types of flasks, just as Sellotape means all sticky tape, and Xerox all photocopiers.
