aside from cats and dogs....i enjoy watching the nature out in my yard and around my neighborhood but those are people so never mind....i dug little ponds when i moved here in my yard and sort of let nature take over them----since the pond pumps kept breaking...and i discovered that toads loved 'em.....then i realized i had dozens and dozens of toads hibernating in the yard as they dug themselves out of their hibernation holes they 'trill' to each other and i imagine it's 'frank get up, it's spring, come on' 'i'm coming, give me a minute'.....then they hop over to the little ponds and basically there's toad orgies....then there'll be thousands of toad eggs, then hundreds of tadpoles and a good 100+ wee little toads survive out of the pond into the yard and out into the neighborhood......
i've learned, since i've studied up on toads a bit, that they try to return to their 'original' pond in the spring.....so every spring when it rains and i know they're out of hibernation i go out in the street in the rain with an umbrella to pick up the toads heading towards my ponds and provide toad taxi service for them so they don't end up splat on the street.....they can also live up to 40 years....there's one i call toadzilla who has to be in her 20 years cuz she's HUGE, softball size.....i've only had one frog and that was just one year.....i much much prefer toads....i think they know me as i can pick them up without a problem....i start talking to them as tadpoles---i am insane, yes i realize this----in hopes they recognize my voice.....it's not officially spring around here til the toads are finally out of hibernation!!
