Die Mensch Crimplene

How about a theme? Two ads that look vaguely similar, maybe?

Crimplene, c. 1973-75

Kraftwerk promotional still, Die Mensch Maschine-era, c. 1978

It Sells Itself!

No visual for this one, it's all sound.

Design History

A prolific German watercolor poster artists, whose career started out as an architect until 1906 when he found his calling.

Hello all...

[livejournal.com profile] vintage_ads is such a great community, and I love seeing the amazing ads over here... but I thought some of you might also be interested in [livejournal.com profile] design_history, and wanted to invite you to check it out. We aren't very big, and while we have several people watching, we can't seem to get anyone to post outside of the mods! I've seen some great posts on this community, some of them have even inspired more detailed posts on [livejournal.com profile] design_history ([livejournal.com profile] amadoj0nes recent CCA ads, for example), so many of you would fit right in!

We created [livejournal.com profile] design_history as a bit of an "academic" community to share and discuss the history of design, but it isn't so serious as all that. If you are interested, please come on over! Membership is open to all (so far we've been crazy-free!)*, and hopefully you'll be pleased by the look of our page.

*I meant no disrespect to [livejournal.com profile] mermaidshotel regarding recent events - not their fault after all! Moreso just that we've had no reason to moderate membership - YET!

1899 Concert Flyer, Aldershot Conservative Club

Apologies in advance for the sheer length of this image.

A concert flyer!

This ad is very, very interesting in terms of both its content and style. Content wise, it's an ad for a "smoking concert", apparently some sort of cigar friendly guys-only party, judging from the funny hand-drawn cartoons in the bottom of the image, which depicts a man being bickered at by his wife. One even depicts him being tied to his chair by his wife who gives him permission to be out until 11 PM only.

Style wise -- Concert / Band posters have changed remarkably little over the past 100 years. Think about every band poster you've ever seen stapled to a telephone pole.. Notice of the event, time and date of the event followed by some last-minute hand drawn fun cartoony stuff on the bottom and in the corners.. This would fit right in!

The cartoons are actually in sequence, numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4. The wife finds out, the wife confronts her husband, her husband gives her the "Yes! But..." excuse, he makes his getaway, gets drunk/exuberant, and has to avoid what looks like a cop walking his beat on the way home. :)

I Think Something's A Little Off...

Worth1000.com is having a photoshopping contest to remix new products and vintage-like advertisement. The results are excellent and hilarious.

Burma Shave: Miles ahead of Fark!

Maybe this is where Drew got his inspiration for snarky headlines.

mod note (the last)

1) somber_sigh has been banned due to racist/homophobic statements. amadoj0nes has been banned due to a homophobic statement. i hope i am not seen as harsh, and i'm sure all of us will miss them both due to their fantastic postings, but nasty and abusive treatment should never be tolerated.

2) i'm on the lookout for a co-mod to helm this little joint. i am becoming increasingly busy, and i feel that a fellow mod would help this place sail more smoothly.
GOOD!: friendly, even-tempered, liberal/lax, preferably actively engaged in this community, good computer/lj skills, preferably had an lj-account for a while (6-months or longer)!
BAD!: control-freaks need not apply!
if you are seriously interested, please IM me.

this entry turned out a bit awkward, i am sorry!
