I have a 1950s Waterman with no pilot light—and yeah, it could suffocate me in my sleep if I were stupid enough to leave the gas on—and it's not even great looking, but it's solid as a rock, with fine gas control of the burners and the oven.
In truth, I use my small appliances far more than the range anyway; you can even bake cookies in the George Foreman grill.
