Canadian Tire's Albert

A charming story and fond memory for many Canadians, "Albert" is the short story of a boy who doesn't let being picked being last for hockey stop him from doing great things down the road with the support of his older brother and Canadian Tire, of course!

A more contemporary Canadian Tire ad called The Outsider echoes "Albert" although I wonder how many people see the connection.

One Day Event - Addresses in Ads: 1929 Bensinger's

Bensinger’s was one of the great local downtown department stores that flourished in the early twentieth century.  By the time I was around, it had relocated to the suburbs; in the nineties it was acquired by a national conglomerate and eventually closed completely.  Their five-story flagship store on West Market Street still stands, with BENSINGER spelled out on the façade between the 3rd and 4th floors.  Today it’s a FedEx, with what appears to be office space above.

ONE DAY EVENT - MASCOTS - Zeddy

Zellers is a defunct Canadian discount retailer. Hundreds of Zellers stores were replaced with Target, only for Target to vacate a few years later. It's a tale of corporate failure that will be taught in B-school for ages!

Anyway, Zellers had a mascot named Zeddy who was kinda like a Care Bear Cousin. He appeared in animated form and was always ready to help you save money!

Zeddy also had a corporeal form and, as Zellers was winding down, they had a little fun with an Adopt Zeddy campaign:

Honest Ed's 1986

The times they are a changin' and Honest Ed's, Toronto's famous four floor bargain store, closed down December 31, 2016 after decades in business. The store was notable for it's great prices, hand painted signs and well, being a local landmark.

Hudson's Bay Company

The Hudson's Bay Company has been a Canadian institution for hundreds of years, but this is my vintage. My mom worked at The Bay and lots of our clothes and household goods came from there.

Commercials of Canadian Christmas Past

My mother worked in a department store in a mall, so Christmas was always special and perhaps a little too materialistic, hehehe! Here are three four ads from Canadian stores that no longer exist.

1989 Service Merchandise

This ad ran in October, 1989. They used to carry all sorts of cool stuff.
