Usually they have a turkey in the oven for a stove ad, too. I think a turkey is the biggest thing anyone might cook/store and they are using it to show capacity.
Honestly, none of my turkeys looked like that going into the fridge. They are usually half eaten by then.
Even in the picture, It looks about 10 -12 inches deep - not much really, but it is an interesting concept. The fifties seemed to have a lot of these forward thinking ideas.
