Taurus, For Us!

The previous post reminded me of this gem. My first car was a 1993 Mercury Sable Wagon LT that had seen better days by the time 2006 rolled around. Last year the Kidney Foundation came and took him - I was kind of sad to give away Remy. He was awesome and bouncy, but getting pretty unsafe to drive. We never did take that trip to IKEA that I promised him. Mercury Sable was the Canadian version of the Taurus wagon.

They sold those sables here too. I have a 2000 Ford Taurus Wagon. I love wagons so much!

My first "new" car was a 1991 Mercury Sable Wagon.
It lasted about 17 years.
All the rubber rotted, mostly the hoses one at a time.
The only body rust was in the spare wheel well.
And all the paint peeled off.
I missed the "secret recall" for the paint campaign.

But it was really reliable 'till the last year.
The 6 cyl fuel injected engine ran well.
It was the perfect size for me: I often packed it with barely an inch to spare.

I was really upset when the styling changed to the rounded "egg" shape with reduced cargo spage. Now it looks like a SUV.

The closest replacement I found for it was a WV Passat Wagon, which was recently discontinued :-(

lol the 1997 bubble was awful. They had to refresh it for 2000. That is what I own. A 2000 Taurus Wagon. I love it so much. It looked futuristic at the time. Now It blends in with all the other cars.

We rented a 90s Taurus once, the later generation that looks more like a fish or a deflated football, was quite nice otherwise

The Taurus (sedan anyway) was also so futuristic in the 80s it served as Robocop's car:

I remember watching the TV series when it was on, it was quite good! Never heard of those SyFy TV movies and I am glad I didn't.

In the U.S. Mercury was the slightly fancier sister brand of Ford - a little nicer and a little more expensive, but essentially the same cars. They were for people who couldn't quite afford a Lincoln but wanted more luxury than Ford. My parents always bought them but their Sable was a sedan.

It blows my mind when I look at this ad and see how revolutionary the Taurus' design was, wow, nearly 30 years ago. The original, first generation cars still look good today and will go down as one of the most significant designs in American automotive manufacture.
It's generally considered the car that really 'saved' Ford from it's 70's and early 80's reputation and set the company on a path of success that continues today.

I love the Japanese sports cars from that time. American cars were pretty horrible. The 80s Mustang was actually good but so ugly!

One thing people may not know is that prior to the Taurus, all head lights had to be Circles or Boxes. Ford had to convince the government to let them design them as something different.

Today you would be hard pressed to find a headlight that is round or square. Now they can be any shape.
