Stik-o-Pep

I find it weird that a candy cane , most commonly associated with the winter, would be wearing a straw hat, a summer item.

May 15 is straw hat day. That was traditionally the day men hung up there felts, and wore their straw hats.

1950 ... stik-o-pep!

Maybe they're trying to promote that you can have your peppermint during the summer and it not be just a winter thing! Or something like that? I know I'm trying to make a point here, but I'm not sure if it's coming across. I just need to go to bed.

Plus, is not mint a summery flavour?

Also I WANT THOSE PEPPERMINT SWIRL LIFESAVERS.

It's kind of a barber shop quartet hat, I think, and then the stripes are like the barber shop...swirly thingy? (I'm so technical)

Those look good!

The straw hat is meant to invoke old fashioned 1890s charm.

Wow, these are better than candy canes! Why can't I find them?

The reference is not seasonal - it's theatrical. “Appearing in a new 'roll'” - note the spotlight. A straw boater and cane were standard attire for vaudeville dance acts.

Ding! Ding! We have a winner.

I was just htinking that the boater was meant to look antique, but now I see the other theatrical references, and you are exactly right. The candy stripes even suggest the striped blazers sometimes worn in those routines, like this image (http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/s320x320/282135_241729529191039_147725871924739_792794_7759349_n.jpg) of Dick Van Dyke in the "Jolly Holiday" scene from Mary Poppins.

Ah, 5 cents... I wish Lifesavers were still only 5 cents a pack. All candy and breath mints seem to be pricy, nowadays.

Do they still make peppermint Lifesavers?

Just "Pep-O-Mint" I think.

Neat. I'll have to remember to keep my eyes open for them.

With all of the hype and sensation over the 100th Anniversary of Oreo Cookies, it seems almost an afterthought that Life Savers is also marking the Century milestone this year.

They used to make Lifesaver Lollipops in peppermint swirl and they were always my favorites. I would stock up on these if they were ever produced again.

The straw hat and peppermint stripes made me think of a kids' show I used to watch in Dallas called Peppermint Place. Now I'm sad because I just found out the host, Jerry Haynes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Haynes), died last September. He was actually a significant part of Dallas media history. I'll have to try to find an ad for the show now!

RIP, Mr. Peppermint!
