Mandate, November 1976 (Cdn edition), p 48

OK, let's be clear: Mandate was a *gay* publication. GAY GAY GAY. And so naturally, we need a woman there to prove that Manly Man Is Manly. I was thinking of this for the "sexist" contest but then spent too much time thinking about the convoluted gender/sexuality/machismo thing going on and got lost in the house of mirrors. Then I notice that *she* is wearing something around her neck too ... how many inches is she? Or wait, is she avertising for what she wants? This penis size thing is confusing.

LOL I was thinking, damn, that's some ad for the times! before rational thinking kicked in. Blame the Mikes hard lemonade!

Oddly, they never sold any of the sixes and couldn't keep the nines in stock.

...or a lot of people wore the +9 design proudly.

I think we've seen things from the Tate Gallery USA before, like a long time ago. And they're all pretty hilariously wtf. This one fits right in.

I bet a lot of those were used for false advertising.

Re: your icon: see my icon.

wow...

took me longer than I'd like to admit to realize what the numbers meant!!!

Was it publication for gay men or gays in general? Maybe that's the size of her strap on.

There's a lot of confused sexuality in the ads from that era. It didn't stop there, either... for several years, International Male, whose mail-order clothing catalogs have been know to turn statues gay, included quite a few women simpering over their "boyfriends" modeling the latest in fuckmewear.

[identity profile] vonjunzt.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you assume that's a female and not a transvestite?

Perhaps the magazine is also for the "bi-curious".

[identity profile] seamonkey-mags.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Tobias is just buy-curious....

This is another one of those items that would make no sense if you found it in a Goodwill, or on your uncle's dresser. And then it would slowly sink in, but you'd try to deny it anyway.

I want to see that Antiques Roadshow -- "Well, this here appears to be an ivory coke spoon, and the necklace indicates that your great uncle was packing in excess of 8 inches..."

[identity profile] bernthewitch.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Buahahaha.

[identity profile] violetscorpion.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
This!!

[identity profile] parkerbenchley.livejournal.com 2010-07-13 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
This for the win.

I have thought there needs to be an x-rated buy/sell show sometime on cable.

[identity profile] glitterberrys.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
God. And I thought I couldn't envision anything more mortifying than the time I found my grandfather's condoms. *shudders*

Except now I kind of hope I DO find one at a Goodwill someday, somehow.

The Tate Gallery in the US is so much more fun than the one in London!

And now I'm intrigued by the pendant on the woman's neck. What is it? Is it a % or a fraction number, like 3/4? And what would that indicate? The size of her clitoris?

[identity profile] teal-cuttlefish.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It sure looks like a % sign to me!

[identity profile] 1girl.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Her necklace looks kind of like a cherry. Ugh.

[identity profile] foxsong.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Y'know, the "9+" wouldn't make me want to leap into bed with the guy. I've only got so much room in there! =:-o

[identity profile] foxsong.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh... sure. Su-u-ure, that's what I was thinkin'... ;-)

[identity profile] parkerbenchley.livejournal.com 2010-07-13 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I remember this ad - they must have repeated them into the 80s, since I don't think I started buying/reading these mags until 80 or 81.

[identity profile] bzul.livejournal.com 2010-07-13 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
A bonus message pendant was included for purchasers of '5' and under, inscribed:
"But, ohh, the magic it knows,
And the places it goes.."

[identity profile] outsdr.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe if they sold one that said "6±" I'd consider it. Or just one with "average."
