Man, I wish it was that easy to find it these days :/

Here you go. (http://www.amazon.com/Accent-Flavor-Enhancer-lb-canister/dp/B0017TN3UC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=grocery&qid=1271554630&sr=8-3-spell)

I'm not entirely sure I need two pounds of it XD

...They should totally make little MSG packets like sugar or Splenda, that would be amazing.

[identity profile] hooverdam.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Don't think they do, but you can get it in salt shakers (http://www.ajinomotofoods.com/Products/AJI-NO-MOTO/100g_shaker.aspx).

That's what I came in here to post about! I buy this stuff at Japanese grocery stores, and like to use it in soups and when cooking Asian dishes. I used it a few hours ago to make croquettes - just a dash though, should have used more.

Why is it that Accent seems to be the only "flavor enhancer" out there? Surely they can't be the only company allowed to make it, right? (I grabbed a couple of jars of generic "flavor enhancer" from Big Lots a few years back and hanven't seen hide nor hair of it since).

[identity profile] freezer.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
And checking the above Amazon link, it would seem that Accent is pretty much the only MSG product that isn't mainly for the food service industry. Which is only slightly less odd. Wonder why that is?

[identity profile] write-light.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Because apart from mass production, MSG has fallen out of favor with consumers. (sodium levels, headaches, whathaveyou)

[identity profile] sylphslider.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is really funny since MSG is standard in all our chip-type snack products (like Doritos).

[identity profile] write-light.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
if people know, they want to avoid it, but it's in many things because it affects the flavor powerfully; either MSG or disodium inosinate/disodium guanylate, etc. etc.

[identity profile] sylphslider.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I just love it when someone's eating a bag of Cheetohs and talking about how they're so glad restaurants stopped seasoning food with MSG. Because, you know, that stuff will mess with your brain. :P

[identity profile] write-light.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
and so it has :D

[identity profile] bkwyrm.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
num num MSG!

[identity profile] freezer.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, that stuff makes the best scrambled eggs!

MSG gives plenty of side effects (http://www.buzzle.com/articles/monosodium-glutamate-side-effects.html), not all of them desirable. (Hey, you asked.) Personally, I don't think glaucoma is a good risk for a little delicious flavor.

There are plenty of brands of this stuff, including Goya Sazón (http://casualkitchen.blogspot.com/2008/10/why-you-should-always-read-ingredient.html).

Great stuff, though highly allergenic! We used to joke that with natrium glutamate, even the fork truly tastes like a fork.

If you'll ever have achy jaw after eating cheap chinese food, yep, that's the natrium/monsodium glutamate that does it.

[identity profile] wakasume.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Go buy MSG at an Asian market. They have it in huge pouches. It literally says "Monosodium Glutamate" on it, lol.

My mom buys it all the time.

I'm glad I don't have any allergies to MSG, b/c that stuff is goooood.

Okay, it "makes" me cook "with a Large Charge"? :D I'm sensing translation issues throughout.
