I was about to say this reminded me of Maurice Sendak's "The Night Kitchen" (you know, that book that got banned from libraries because of nudity in the 70s...or was it 60? I wouldn't know, it was before my time) But then I remembered that Sendak actually said that the book was partially inspired by the ad, which he had seen when he was a child and felt spiteful that the bakers would bake during the time he slept and couldn't watch.

Thanks for posting this, I've always wanted to know what it looked like, very cool!

Heh, The Night Kitchen is one of the greatest picture books ever. It looks like Sendak might have been inspired by the illustration in the ad, too. The shapes of the buildings here remind me of his (though maybe it's just a general Art Deco-inspired style)

I miss Hydrox... they were so much better than Oreos, they need to start making them again.

This is a great ad--Hydrox cookies, "In the Night Kitchen", and the great art--all fantastic themes! Thanks for posting it. :)
