It's the one medicine that Ma Ingalls specifically asked for when Pa went to town in one of the books. I guess everyone probably had it on hand in those days, or tried to!

I also remember in Gone With The Wind, Mrs. Merriwether told Rhett to put quinine on Bonnie's thumb to get her to stop sucking it. :P

I had an Anthropology professor in college who took quinine for many years for malaria. It made him go deaf. He was pretty cheerful about it. I would have been pissed off forever!
