I wonder if the phrase existed in 1882. Sometimes I'm surprised by how old these expressions are.

I tried to do some google searching and couldn't find the origins of it. It is very surprising at times how old some expressions are. I have a feeling the pearl reference might indeed be that older and/or older than that even.
