I read a lot of books from the 1900-1929 era, and I have found three things to be true:
1. Authors would always make a big deal about people using slang.
2. Anything deemed slang was set apart in quotation marks.
3. There are dozens of words and expressions in common use today that have a slangy past.
(The word "date" in all forms, as a verb describing a social appointment is one that surprised me--as well as the backformation into a noun referring to the person with whom one has said engagement.)

I've never been to White Castle. We have Krystal instead, which is basically the southern equivalent of White Castle from what I hear.

Having eaten at both, I can assure you that Krystal can't hold a candle to White Castle. They might appear to be the same, but Krystals are awful.

I think you are right. As a teenager I used to love KFC but hadn't eaten it for many, many, many years. I gave it a try just a couple years ago and could not BELIEVE how salty it was. My companion, who is an afficianado, said it was just fine. To me, inedible. The recipe must have gotten saltier and saltier over the years and no one even notices.

Actually, White Castle hamburgers are still the same. I find them pretty nasty, but they've been selling those suckers since 1921!
