Dionne quintuplets/Quaker Oats Dream Home contest, 1935

I do not like this ad. I do not like how the quints were exploited, and... here! Have an ad so I won't rant!

I tagged this as "contest" because it was one, but this is obviously not a contest entry for the comm!

OMG "Which would you adopt?" I hope no one ever showed them the results. D:

I shall have to ask my grocer's name for future contests. :D

They did some horrible things in marketing those girls.

Every one of these ads notches Hell's thermostat up another degree for Dr. Dafoe and his minions...and I feel like staging a retro-active boycott of Quaker.

Dionne bio-parents: "Um... All five. We would adopt ALL FIVE because that way we might actually get to see/raise our kids."

I hope the winner's essay was "I would adopt none of them, because they have a family already."

Sheesh. -_-

My very thought. I'd rather have sponsored them back into their parents' hands.

I know the girls bitterly resented being put on display like this.

I have to say, I was fascinated when I read about them in an encyclopedia and wanted to know all about them.

They're beautiful. And I think the mouth on Yvonne was painted on in the picture. Some of the other girls' pictures were touched up, but not as obviously as Yvonne's.

Which would you adopt? Hm.....like "How Much is That Doggie In the Window"?

Marie. The others don't even come close.

Now I'm wondering which one was the most popular.

Umm, all of them, so I could strap them into modern car seats and take them back to their parents? 'Grocers! You're in on this too,' isn't making me feel too kindly towards them, either. I am kind of amazed that you could just address something to a business in Saskatoon or Peterboro and have it arrive . . . or maybe they didn't want to bother with Canadian entries, and that wouldn't work. I don't have any living family members who were around then, so I can't ask.

I find these personality descriptions to be somewhat dubious.

"This one, I think she's called Marie, is sort of cute but cries and has tantrums if she's overtired. Next to her is, um, Yvonne ??? who is sort of cute but cries and has tantrums if she's overtired. Pretty much the same for the rest."

Oh, "the Ontario, Canada, government has already adopted them and guaranteed them a wonderful future". Yikes.

[identity profile] pikkewyntjie.livejournal.com 2012-07-15 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, letting the government take over worked out well, didn't it? (Must. Not. Launch. Into. Libertarian. Rant.)

[identity profile] vespurrs.livejournal.com 2012-07-14 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Thank goodness the Canadian government adopted them. They might have had to grow up with their parents otherwise!

I had to look them up on Wikipedia. What a harrowing childhood, especially as their parents apparently didn't treat them well (if their allegations are true that is putting it mildly) once they had their custody back.
