1974

This use to be a favorite on my family's breakfast table.

...I can't decide whether this is supposed to be a pun or not.

Whatever those animators were smoking, I want some.

I never cared for CoCo Wheats, but I do like that little jingle!

I remember that commercial! Usually, though, we had Rice Crispies or Corn Flakes.

Was it like flakes or puffs, or was it more like cream of wheat?

Rubbery? Man oh man. I guess I'll stick with Cocoa Krispies if I want chocolate cereal.

One of my old roommates used to mix peanut butter with her cocoa wheats. It got real super rubbery in a hurry.

Interesting, considering Cream of Wheat's logo was (and is) a Negro stereotype cook (a character who used to be known as Rastus, though I guess that moniker was dropped long ago). This is Cream of Wheat turned 180 degrees.

IIRC, about this time there was also a breakfast cereal called Sweet Wheats, which had a bunch of animated kids in one of its commercials. One was a black kid who used to shout, "Sweet Wheats got soul!" The concept of a breakfast cereal with "soul"...well, it's rather mind-boggling, doncha think?

I detect Robert Crumb influence at work there, though perhaps not as pronounced as the animated ads for Shasta soda with the little guy trucking.

Did they bundle packs of acid with Coco Wheats?
