Because apparently women are still be attracted to a man even if his mouth smells like gross >.< Blarg.
Not to mention there wasn't as much pressure on men to get married and have kids as there was on women. I watched a video from the 1940s about Marie Curie, and her father-in-law said something along the lines of "a woman who doesn't have children is a selfish waste because she has life but won't share it" D:
