I wonder if it was much tastier then, with the two kinds of maple syrups & real cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.

I am sure it was. I'm from NZ, where everything is sweetened by cane sugar from Australia's northern plantations (well, except the artificially sweetened things, of course). Whenever I've visited America I've really been struck by the difference of flavour in things like Coca-Cola. I definitely don't like the flavour of corn syrup as much.
Thank goodness, then, for Coke Zero, which I shall imbibe when I want a fizzy drink on my next visit!
