Flintstones cigarette commercial

How amazing is it that they have a commercial for Winston cigarettes with Fred and Barney smoking? This rivals the Topsy ads for sheer tackiness; don't tell me they didn't know!

haha, "let's go around back where we don't see 'em" brilliant! At 20X the flavour, who would suffer by watching wifey clean.

Back when the Flintstones was first prime time TV fare, it wasn't a kid's program; it was family programing, more aimed at adults, a sort of animated take off on the Honeymooners. This was back in the day when the research was piling up, but before cigarettes were officially declared a carcinogen, and warnings and such were not yet required. I was rather little at the time, but I remember...It started in 1960, and the first two seasons had Winston as its sponsor; you need to remember that the Surgeon General's report about the hazards of smoking didn't come out until 1964, and cigarette smoking didn't hit its peak until 1965. TV ads for cigarettes weren't even banned until 71.

By the time I was sitting in front of the telly the Flintstones were firmly in 'cartoon for kids' territory, so seeing this was just...weird!

It's funny to see things pre 1971, isn't it? I was watching an episode of the Dick Van Dyke show, and Sally offered Buddy a cigarette and it still made me blink a bit, just because it is so...what's the word...archaic, maybe?

That just broke my brain.

I go back to the first couple of seasons and remember the commercials very well. Used to be on Sunday night, I think.

It was a simpler time. It was a stupider time.
