SEA MONKEYS!!

Who didn't see this ad as a kid (if you're that old) and want these?? You can teach them tricks!! Like a pack of friendly trained seals!

From Women's Day March 1973

I had sea monkeys for a long time when I was a kid. Then my mother killed them by dropping their container. :(

Caricatures shown not intended to depict Artemia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_monkeys).”

I always desperately wanted some. My brothers told my Mom they were just bugs and that was the end of that.

Those ads terrified me as a child. I always thought those little creatures were going to crawl out of the bowl at night and do nefarious things whilst I was sleeping.

OMG I've always wanted to find someone who actually HAD them! so did they have human faces and crowns and everything???

[identity profile] sunshinesarah.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, no. :P They mostly looked like bitsy floating specks. If you looked closely, you could see that they were super-miniature shrimp.

It was cool this one time when some of them were pregnant, and they had these tiny little bellies with black specks in them. At least, I think they were pregnant. Or do they just carry eggs that are fertilized externally? Whatever. It was neat!

How cool! thanks for sharing.

How wonderful of you to post this. I've never seen the things *live*.

[identity profile] dazedpuckbunny.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too! I had mine for about two years and then my mom and the feather duster traumatized me. :( I loved those little things.

Boy, did I yearn for a family of sea-monkeys. They re just brine shrimp, right? GAWD, did I want these as a kid. my own family, in a bowl, for me to watch... what a trip!

[identity profile] dazedpuckbunny.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they carry eggs internally because I remember mine started mating and I was like "Stop it! Stop it you're siblings!!!!!!!"

[identity profile] progbear.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I remember seeing those ads. I was quite the aquarist as a kid, feeding my fish brine shrimp on a weekly basis. It wasn’t till my dad said that Sea Monkeys were brine shrimp that I made the connection. “Man,” I thought, “those kids who bought them must have totally felt ripped off!”

[identity profile] kip-w.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The strip Sam & Max had a page of "Did You Know...?" factoids. My favorite showed Max (the scary rabbit-thing) freaking out over the information that Sea Monkeys are not primates!!

Ah, I think that was the exact ad that I saw and have them. My mom took one look at them proclaimed them to be 'just brine shrimp', to which I said, "Shut up, they are Sea Monkeys!"

[identity profile] roamingtigress.livejournal.com 2008-03-02 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
So did I :( I went through this sorta long-ish period where I was petless and was so desperate to have any sort of critter.
