I didn't realize they started individually plastic-wrapping vegetables that far back.

It's actually (or *was* back then) a biodegradable cellulose film, not a petroleum based plastic. Wiki says "manufactured full time since the 1930s". It was the basis of scotch tape (cellotape) too. :)
