My goodness, those are daring! Just look at all that arm and leg!

Look at those prices! These suits (even the hats) were enormously expensive for the time, and would only be bought by the well-to-do.

Per Capita Income in New York State in 1910 was $477. That's in a year. So we're talking over a week's salary to buy one swimming outfit.

Bonwit Teller built its reputation on being the crème de la crème, so this price breakdown comes as no surprise to me.

And still close to the age of the robber barons so there were plenty of people with $$$, especially in Manhattan

oh, i love Aile!! and i giggle at the shoes...my grandmother kept an old, old pair of shoes that she ONLY used at the beach. and yes, she wore them into the water, too. of course in her case, she did not want anyone to see her feet.

i suspect that her feet were wider in the begining but the shoes she wore were *not* wide. her feet ended up with her little toe bent *across* her foot, facing the instep. so she always wore shoes, that no one could see it.

Those are so pretty...are those middle shoes *boots*?! And can someone explain first lady's hat?

"The Specialty Shop of Originations" I can't even begin to imagine what that actually means.

Yes.

I like these ads, but I can't imagine having to wear something like this to the beach. I wore less clothing than this to my office today!

Yes! These are much too pretty to be just bathing suits. They look like proper dresses!

Yes.

I can't swim much at all, but I can't even imagine trying to swim in the "Maillot" swimming suit. At least it has bloomers attached?

I love the one on the left.
