You're right - Laudanum certainly would be the additive of choice in this case but it was doubtless illegal or something by this time.

I do know that you could buy laudanum in drugstores in Britain, even as late as the 1930s - but you had to inform the druggist what it was for - so I'm not entirely sure what the legal status was. People did know it was addictive by this point.
