unappealing food competition submission....

from Woman's Day May 1973...please vote yes or no in the comments, in addition to your other comments....

do you think people 37 years ago found this appealing looking??

[identity profile] seamonkey-mags.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a YES from me. The thought of putting that in my mouth makes me nauseous.

[identity profile] veronica-jay.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I vote yes - it took me a few hard seconds of searching to find the actual food in this picture (besides the jar of mayo and the little garnishes)

Oh, yes.

[personal profile] whoseline_wlsc 2010-05-09 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm certainly not waiting for that, for sure. I'm not a fan of any kind of food in gelatin, but mayonnaise...ick.

Yes.

[identity profile] waitingonsunday.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to imagine eagerly digging into that with a spoon. It's not a pleasant thought.

[identity profile] hunnyfreak.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes!

When I saw this I said out loud, "EEEEEEWWWWWW!!!"

[identity profile] purplesocks.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes - that's horrifying.

My husband has a strong distaste for what he refers to as cold, slimy foods; anything from deli meats to potato salad. I pick on him about it constantly - but this creation is too much even for me to stomach.

Yes

[identity profile] my-hypocrisy.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all, I have a rule against anything that involves gelatine that isn't dessert. Secondly, two of the three food items I hate most are mayonnaise and vinegar. The only way this could be any worse for me is if they'd included the one food item I hate even more than those -- mustard. *Shudder!* Nightmares!

[identity profile] franklanguage.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Remember, kids…gelatin is made from boiled bones.

I normally like veggie/chip dips....but this? No thanks.

People really loved their molds back then, huh?

[identity profile] mental-picture.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I gagged at the sight of this.

No

[identity profile] charlotterhys.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It kind of looks like a brain, but I think it'd make good veggie dip.

Great picture, though!

YES

[identity profile] nonsense-at-all.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Cucumber mousse? With gelatin?

YES.

[identity profile] paularubia.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
My eyes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[identity profile] amiga500.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Boiled bones sounds a lot tastier than that thing.

YES

[identity profile] lexixanatos487.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. I think I threw up a litte. I hate mayo in large quantities!

[identity profile] cremepuff.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. god.

Now that I think about it, Kraft continued to advertise some pretty disgusting recipe "suggestions" (especially around Christmas time) into the late 80's, long after this one debuted.

[identity profile] meezergal.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, the poor cucumbers! I love cucumbers and I can't imagine what they did to deserve this! *shudder*

Yes

[identity profile] leahtaur.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Good god. x_x

Yes

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That looks horrible.

YES

[identity profile] medren.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Mayonnaise+Gelatin=barf

Yes

[identity profile] christhawk.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would you do that to a perfectly good cucumber???

[identity profile] annamaryse.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Flavor this with mint, reduce the mayo, add yogurt instead of cream, and serve with curry. But YES UGH!

NO

[identity profile] koboldmaki.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I admit, I'd still serve tzatziki this way if people weren't so anti-jigglyfood.

[identity profile] stefanie-bean.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Funny, combining yogurt, garlic, cucumber and lemon juice for tzatziki sauce sounds delicious, but this just looks like it got moldy.

[identity profile] mschilepepper.livejournal.com 2010-05-10 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Mmmm, hoof squeezins!

[identity profile] zitronenhai.livejournal.com 2010-05-10 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, thank you. I have been grossing out a coworker with gelatin horrors and I had been looking all over for this one. As soon as I stop vomiting, I will email it to her.

nah

[identity profile] 3cthelion.livejournal.com 2010-05-10 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
as are most animal stocks which most people (at least non-vegetarians) have no trouble with. as gross as it sounds, bone marrow is pretty nutritious.

this is not appetizing to me, but i just don't like cucumbers. if it had sun-dried tomatoes or something i'd probably try it. i guess i'm going to be stingy with my 'yes' votes.

[identity profile] outsdr.livejournal.com 2010-05-10 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Made it. Tasted it. Hated it.

[identity profile] outsdr.livejournal.com 2010-05-10 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know ... I'm not feeling very tempted!

yes!

[identity profile] albear.livejournal.com 2010-05-16 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hell yes!
