Have you got the pop up with the new user agreement? Here it is if you haven't seen it already. We're apparently suppose to know Russian laws. Then at the bottom:

13.4 Paid Services are not subject of this Agreement. The Administration shall not be liable for Paid Services. All Paid Services’ related questions shall be address to Live Journal Inc. [there's a hyperlink for LJ account support]. So apparently the new agreement is just free accounts? But isn't it ALL administrated by Russia now?

Uh?? Dafuq?! They've done a wonderful job communicating that the servers moved to Russia months ago [sarcasm] and now this. My icon sums up feelings succinctly.

ETA LJ has actually posted news about this! If you don't subscribe to that here it is. Comments are screened--I believe they know the reaction. I did post one though, because isn't Live Journal Inc Russian too now? They aren't very clear about that. We shall have wait and see.

Another ETA On the LJ news post, they answered my question. They said Live Journal Inc is still in CA, USA.

me too. i have no idea what to make of it. the world is transient. we are just a bunch of rats in a giant alien experiment. the owners of these code services, ie. blog sites rarely give a rat's ass about intellectual property. i remember when aol and geocities went down. what a sad loss of human energy. let''s face it, we live inside a robot called the matrix.

And I agree with everything else said here as well.

Thanks for summing up how I feel about the whole new user agreement, even though lj news stated that the "LiveJournal’s policy on user privacy and data security has undergone no major changes."

I have no idea what's going on tbh, but I'll continue to blog and create icons (I don't think the Russian government cares about my fanfictions, blog, and icons)

I agree with your icon on general principles. The whole thing sounds as other news releases have sounded, repressive, like the 'more than 3000 replies to a community means Russian Law 69 applies.' :S

According to Bloomberg (http://www.bloomberg.com/research/stocks/private/snapshot.asp?privcapId=13513573), LiveJournal Inc is still headquartered in San Francisco. However, I can't get the link they provide for LiveJournal Inc (http://www.livejournalinc.com) to load. I haven't tried the phone number they give, but my guess is it doesn't work either. The whole thing is pretty bizarre.

Dreamwidth is amazing as a backup. It doesn't take very long at all. It was so painless when I copied my entries over that I kicked myself for not knowing about it when GJ went down and I had been painstakingly copying my entries back to LJ. And then I lost several years' worth of entries.

Well most of their users by far are Russian so Russian laws are not something strange and unexpected here. And for example whenever we have to tick all those boxes on Facebook from Europe we don't go "Huh? Are we supposed to know US laws?". This is how it works, I don't see anything unusual here. I was expecting them to start going more and more Russian given that the international part of LJ shrunk almost to inexistent now and the Russian part is still big, this is predominantly a Russian site now.

Yes, it is.

Excuse me for breaking into.

Everything is very simple and easy. Yesterday president elections campain started in Russia and our authorities are worried that LJ would turn into opposition blog platform. So they go on crushing it down.

And you, guys - I hate saying this, but you are not taken into account anymore by those who rule in LJ. That's awful and sad, but I'm afraid things might become even worse eventually.

A lot of Russian users moved either to FB, or to DW. But as for the latter, I have the same feeling as a user above: a ghost town. Alas.

Livejournal is a Russian owned company. They closed their offices in San Fransico, as well as relocated their servers from Finland to Russia after the company was bought.

There has always been threats of people's account being shut down, and social media is monitored, don't kid yourself.

This part of the agreement has many people upset as it's basically saying that anything you post on LJ whether it's fan fiction, artwork, videos, blogs, it becomes the property of Livejournal to do with as they please, this also includes the private messages you send and receive on the service.

Here's the portion of the new agreement that has many people upset:

addendum about the new agreement. Credit to lj user kirathaune.

So, we all got greeted by th new User Agreement on LJ. Of course, I read the whole thing, since my momma taught me to read that kind of shit.

Of particular note - CREATORS, PAY ATTENTION TO THIS:

“9. Content

9.1. By posting Content, User shall:

9.11. Guarantee to the Administration that Content and terms of its appearance on the Service meets all the requirements of the applicable laws, that User has received all rights and permits necessary to post such a Content;

9.12. In respect of any Content which constitutes intellectual property, User provides to the Administration a non-exclusive (simple) license to use his/her Content in order to provide the Service by reproducing his/her Content as well as by making it public for the entire period the Content is posted on the Service. If User participates in any rankings or if User’s Content is used in any editorial projects of the Service, User provides to the Administration an additional authorisation to modify, shorten and amend his/her Content, to add images, a preamble, comments or any clarifications to his/her Content while using it, and in certain cases based on the Service functions, an authorisation to use User’s Content anonymously.”

Also, in the definition of Terms, section 3:

“Content means User`s information within the Service, including any information published during the process of Registration, in Blogs and Communities as a note or comment as well as sent by User in private messages using the Service.”

I think it might be time to take our art etc. off LJ, since they’re pretty much saying if we post it there, they can do whatever they want with it.

Unquote

The exodus to Dreamwidth has already begun.

Not that I really expect LJ with me helping themselves to my posts and fan fiction as I'm just a small fish in a big pond, but in general it's the principle of the thing...taking my 'stuff?' I don't think so. I'm not closing my LJ account just yet, but am off to Dreamwidth. There were mirror communities set up over there, when we last had issues with LJ a few years ago. Not a great fan of DW but it's better than nothing if LJ becomes too oppressive.

What I am doing is posting my writings elsewhere and just posting a link to it in my LJ writing Community. I thinks that's a fix that will work for now.
